Track & Field Days!

Well I can't honestly say that this is the boys favorite day of the year...but they we're happy to have a day off of school! These four boys in this picture were the once who were the least excited about the day. But I must add that they had great attitudes and participated in all events and they all did really well. They brought home some 1st, 2nd & 3rd place ribbons!
Way to go guys!!!

Love this event. As soon as the kids can walk they can participate. They are so cute!

Here we are...the 'Best Class Ever'...right Barry!

What a blessing our class has been to us over the past two years. We can hardly believe that we will be saying our good-bye's in just a couple of weeks. We have learned so much from everyone and we will always have such special memories of our time together. We ask that you please pray for our class as we all prepare to
'REACH OUT BEYOND OUR WORLD!'

Oh and great news ~ the Lord brought in what we needed to pay of our training debt here! We are now able to start putting away for the things we need to head overseas!

Tech Tip Class and February News!

Here we are in our second round of Tech Tips! We have been covering things like making and using a snake bite zapper {I was able to zap Billy...a couple of times :) }, AC Transformers, Inverters, Water Filtration, How to covert 240 v. to 140 v., How to protect our equipment on the field, and tons and tons of other information that will be helpful when we get on the field.

Friday we were able to go on a "Field Trip" down to the shop where we learned how to properly convert and adjust a propane stove. Here are some pics from the field trip!

The flame in the back shows us a bad flame that needs adjusting and the front one is perfect

This is a manometer...this is the $6.00 tool that we need to help us adjust our stove.
Just add water to it and hook it up to the orifice.

By slowly turning on the burner the propane pushes the water...the number we want the water on is 11 1/2 on the top right side and 11 1/2 on the bottom left side.

Some other news...
In the midst of February Bill was invited out snowmobiling one day. This came at a good time. We were in the middle of some very challenging classes for us and he spent the month working on our vehicle...this was just what he needed!

Update on our Nissan Xterra!
Bill was able to get it apart and put back together twice! After he got it put together the first time with all the repairs they hooked it up to a computer and it showed that a sensor was bad...UGH!
So he took it apart again and replaced the sensor and alas...she's working great now!
We would like to thank those who gave above and beyond toward this. We are so grateful and appreciative for you...God has met this large financial need. As we look ahead and prepare to go to Papua New Guinea we rest in His faithfulness, His timing and that nothing is IMPOSSIBLE for Him! Bill has figured out the total of expenses for the parts and it was $1900.00 {Canadian} the total that was given toward this was $1500.00 American...after the conversion to Canada it came up to $1870
This is the piece of silicone {compared to a quarter} that he found in the head blocking the antifreeze.

The boys were pretty excited about going to Snow Camp with their Youth Group. With the expenses that we had from our vehicle we wondered how to come up with the cost of the trip {$80 each}...when two different people from the church that their Youth Group is generously paid their way! God is so good and continues to show the boys that He cares about all the details in our lives.

They say kids grow overnight...Garrett and Bill were in the kitchen side by side and I couldn't resist getting a pic. at their height difference.

We made it out to the big game between NTBI {New Tribes Bible Institute} in Jackson, Michigan vs. New Tribes Mission Canada. The teams were made up of staff and students and, we were all out for a good time!

Health and Wellness Classes

We have been enjoying our classes this week on Health and Wellness.
Yesterday was great we learned about healthy living and eating, and today about diseases, worms, {we can identify many of them now along with signs and symptoms}, fevers and many other illness. All of the information that we are getting this week will help us when we are on the field and someone gets sick or hurt. Today we were able to get some hands on training on checking blood pressure, checking the ears and yes...giving a shot! I was not going to give a shot, the thought of it was just terrible but if you check out the pictures and videos below you will see that both Bill and I took part of today's activities.

We'd like to introduce you to our "GIRL"!

This is our 2002 Nissan Xterra 4x4! She has been a great vehicle for us, one that we have come to rely on and trust to get us from here to there. Our hope was that she would work perfectly for us especially since we probably will only have her another year. Well...she is sick...she hasn't been feeling well for awhile now but there were things we could do that we thought would remedy her illness. While we were in New York over break we had a friend look at it and the diagnosis was not good. The results came back that she is in need of a new head gasket. UGH! Poor girl, she's been looking so good and cheerful lately too. But the facts are the facts and she will be going in for about a week. We aren't sure the day but it will be soon. We have stocked up on food so if it takes a week we'll be fine without her. What's a week after you've gone through Jungle Camp! Bill is planning on performing the "surgery" with assistance from our on staff chief "car surgeon" Ernest. Please pray for the whole thing...Bill, that he'll have a steady hand, Ernest that he will have patience with Bill, and the biggie...for the financial cost of it all. We have heard it's the most expensive thing to have to fix.
On a good note...We had a great Christmas Break. We came back totally ready for our final semester, which started today. We have a week long class on Health and Wellness. We loved it today and tomorrow we get to learn how to give each other shots...not sure how this will go, I thought I'd video this!

What a wonderful weekend we had here in Durham! The snow started on Saturday morning and it was just beautiful to watch it come down all day....

and the next day! It continued to snow on Sunday, so the boys ended up going out for a while with their friend Titus.

I couldn't get all the way back but Matt & Erin's apartment is on the opposite end of the building than us. So having the two ends decorated really looks nice.

Our neighbor's Peter and his wife Kathy have a beautiful little pavilion tucked in the woods behind their house. They put lights on it and tonight it looked just perfect!

Culture Event # 1...destination Kensington Market!

We got up Monday to head to Kensington Market in Toronto for our 1st Culture Event, only to wake up to snow! UGH! We traveled down with our language helper, Cynthia, which was really nice visiting with her and hearing about her life.

As we began our day our first stop was Tim Horton's 1/2 way there so I thought I should get the word for bathroom and toilet in Spanish...uh the joy of knowing this wonderful practical expression. :)

Oh! one last potty break before we got on the subway. I had to take this picture in the bathroom at the mall. Isn't this sink awesome? {Thank you Emma for being such a wonderful model}

We traveled to a mall close to Toronto to jump on a subway. This was fun!

Which took us to a Trolley Car...This was really fun! We all stood in the aisle because it was packed. I actually stood by the driver and Bill and another guy in our class actually stood on the steps...but there was still room for one more :)

We were dropped off close by the market.

We had decided not to eat one big meal at one place but to eat all day...and we did!

I'm glad to say 2 days later that none of us have gall bladder problems. With all the grease we all felt just fine at the end of the day.

We were grateful that the snow was not here and it was actually a perfect day. We had layers on so having it a little cooler kept us comfortable.

It was time to leave so we headed back to the Trolley Car that took us back to the subway. Here is a video after we got back to the mall.

Is it November already?

It's been a while so we thought we would give you the crash course of what's new...and remind you of what we look like. :)

In the beginning of Oct. we took the boys and went for a nice drive up north. We drove to the top of a mountain and just took in all of the beauty of God's creation.

Then on the 16th we celebrated Garrett's 15th birthday!

The guys in our class had planned all week that they would kidnap Garrett and take him out for his birthday. The plan was that Friday night we send Garrett out with the garbage to the Garbage shed. They would be hiding in the shadows and grab him and go. Well, they came out yelling and he just stood there. So here's how it went down.

Ah...the 1/2 price appetizers at Crabby Joe's was worth the hassel! Garrett loved it, thanks guys!

At the end of the month some of our class went for a hike to a nearby falls. It was a nice break from our studies and some heartaches that our family has gone through.

At the end of Oct. we had received an email from home that Bill's mom and step-fathers home had burned so we had decided to finish up our week of "structures of communication" and then go back and be with the family. Upon arrival we were hit by the news that Bill's uncle had passed away. His uncle and step-father are brothers. It was a long weekend helping settle his parents in a home that they are renting {we thank the Lord that the house right next door to their home was for sale and the lady is letting them rent} and then there was calling hours and a celebration of life for his Uncle "Hugs". We were so glad to be there and with the family. It gives us peace to know that as hard as it was to leave we left them in the arms of our Lord, who we know will sustain them and give them the same peace. They are all believers and are resting in Him. We want to thank all of you for your prayers and notes of encouragement that we have received.

Ok...let's switch gears. This is Kaden!

He is so precious! His parents are involved in youth group at their church, so we are often blessed with Kaden's presence on those nights. He has a great character and enjoys being the center of our attention.

Back to training....tomorrow {Oct. 10th} we begin a part of our training that we have been looking forward to. It's call Language Practicum. The objective over the next few weeks is not about being able to speak a new language but to use the training that we've had to acquire this new language. Speaking should come naturally but it's not our focus. We have been paired up with a Language Helper {someone who knows another language and will help us learn it.} We will meet with Cynthia and she will teach us Spanish. You will hear more about Cynthia and our journey of acquiring this new language. We start right out with a field trip to Toronto tomorrow for our first culture event. Throughout the next five weeks we will meet with Cynthia and apply what we have learned this year. We had Sounds and Symbols = writing this new language using the International Phonetic Alphabet & Structures of Communication = determining the sentence structure of this language. All of this is good training for those who go into a tribe that doesn't have a written language.
Please be in prayer for all of us as a class as there is a lot of time involved in this part of our training. Juggling our learning, practicing, planning, kids, plus daily life will be difficult and we will need to prioritize and schedule our our days wisely.

A little help making pizza

Every Friday night we have our family pizza and a movie night. I make home make homemade pizzas and we watch a movie together as a family. We have been doing this for the past several years.

Well, since we have been here I have had a little help with the pizza. This little girls mommy and daddy like playing soccer on Friday's, so we often get to enjoy having a little girl take over our house while they play.

She was 2 1/2 months old when we all came into training

so it has been a joy to see her change and grow. Our family enjoys our visits from Alaena and even thought it would be nice to go to the same field as her parents go...=)!

Classes are under way!

I know that many of you are wondering how things are going...there is a newsletter in the making. :) Our classes have been a little...uummm...let's say challenging for Bill and I this year. And it's only been a couple of weeks.

Bill started out with a full week of P.T.C. {Practical Training Class} where they paint, clean and help with maintance of building and grounds. This is always Bill's favoite part of training. Once we got into the classroom we had a week of Orientation, where we heard how this year will be a year of Becoming...

What will we Become this year? Our prayer is that we will change into something better than we are today...God needs us to be a certain kind of person to accomplish the ministry that He has for us in the future. So this year we are trusting the Lord for great things...for great CHANGE, as we walk this road of BECOMING!

Again it came down to our THINKING...ATTITUDE ...ACTION!

What we Think about God, people, life, everything, affects our ATTITUDE, which results in our ACTIONS. It's always good to keep these three words before us everyday...we are encouraged to "...bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ..."

Then it bagan...our class of Sounds and Symbols!

We were encouraged to blow up our English Language Box...

Every language in the world is made up of sounds. Each language uses an average of 40 to 50 sounds in all sorts of different combinations to make up the speech.

We are hearing and seeing sounds and symbols that look familar to us but do not have the same name or sound that we in our "English Box" know. This has been quite a stuggle for us after years of communicating in our English language to switch gears...especially when I like communicate in my English language. :)

Our classes is split into two groups, this is great for us who need more help! :)

I {Jen} come home most days with a headache and tired. We realize that these classes will help us to build relationships, learn a langauge and culture much easier...but it sure is hard to teach these old dogs {Bill and I} new tricks...hee hee hee! I can't wait to start to write more with symbols, I love to try to figure it out, it's like a puzzle. :) Poor Bill, he doesn't like puzzles! He has been able to make each new sound but has a hard time remembering the symbols and I'm just the opposite...isn't God good?! We are a perfect fit.

Update on the boys...who at their age would rather be refered to as "guys"!

Their studies are going well and their grades reflect this. But they are typical teens who aren't to fond of school!

Here is Garrett's class! This is grades 9 and 10. There are no kids in grade 11 this year and only one Senior.

Here is Jake's class. Yes, it's him and his good friend. Jake loves this! They have a good time together and with their teachers.

They will be able to go on a lot of field trips this year, combined with grades 9-10 the 6 boys will have a good time.

Hmmmm, where to go!

With classes around the corner we thought it would be nice to travel around and see some of beautiful Ontario before the busy schedules start.

We got up on Saturday morning and with our map in hand we headed out.

Our first stop was to see Ingils Falls.

We had to stop at the Dairy Queen because it made us think our good friends back in the States.

Then on to Wiarton to see Wiarton Willy...{like Puxatony Phil back in the States} Doesn't Jake look thrilled to be sitting next to a giant, stone groundhog? :)

We stopped for a late lunch at this little Fish and Chips place...mmmmm Jen's favorite!

We headed West to Lake Huron, it's always beautiful there. We went to Sauble Beach and really wished we had our suits. It was finally a nice warm day...perfect for a swim. We found some go-carts in town and the guys raced instead.

We thought we'd see a movie but those playing were questionable so the money we would have spent on the movie we found a used Mario Cart for our Wii and went home and played that.

Bill started all day P.T.C. this week and we are already beginning to see the new students coming in for training. It's quite exciting to see and hear their testimonies and how God worked in their lives to bring them here.

Summer Break!

We had a nice break back in New York. It was good to be able to catch up with some of you and apologize for those of you we missed. Time flies when you're having fun. We were able to rest comfortably thanks to Jen's parents who housed us.

And even though it rained a lot Jen was able to enjoy one sunset with her sister, Michelle.

and she got her haircut together with her older sisters, Michelle at the top and Chris on the right.

The chef at the Ramada Inn made Jen's vacation special when he made especially for her a Tropical Coconut Shrimp Salad...mmmmm her favorite! Thanks Beetle!

Bill ended his summer break with a 250+ mile motorcycle ride with his cousin Les, friend Roe, Les' friend Doug.

Jungle Camp '08 part 2

You might ask...what made Jungle Camp so much fun? ...the kids!

What kinds of food did we eat? Chicken...

Eggs... of course!

and a special treat on Canada Day {July 1}...Ice Cream!

We ate things like sloppy joes and chicken fajitas; french toast and crepes. I canned our fruit, veggies and meat so we ate well and everything was sooooo good!

Jungle Camp '08 Part 1

I'm still going through pictures but thought it was time to show you our wonderful time in Jungle Camp. We had a such a great time living and experiencing life "in the bush". Our planning and preparing paid off and we had plenty of food and our home kept us warm and dry. We had quite a few very damp and cold days and nights but we enjoyed every minute of it.

I'll start off with the day we moved up and made our first trip.

The four of us walked up together carrying our heavy loads, unloaded our packs and totes and went back to the apt. to get another load. We all worked together and carried it all up in 9 loads...imagine with one person it would have been 36 loads...Thank you Lord for giving us son's! :)

After we put our belongings away Bill bleached the dirt around our bedroom. {If you know me you know that I love bleach and hate bugs!}

Happy Father's Day! Garrett made Bill some breakfast.

Then we had our neighbor's in for Father's Day dinner. Steak and mushrooms and a broccoli salad was on the menu and boy did it taste good!

Our days were filled with daily chores one that I enjoyed was making bread...

my least favorite was laundry! We washed in one tub with a plunger and then rinsed in our second tub and we rung them out by hand.

When the laundry wouldn't dry because of the weather I would dry them on the stove or line in the house. I even dried socks in the oven!

The boys helped with cutting and splitting wood. Because of the cold weather and rain we kept our fire going in the stove to heat the house so we went through a lot of wood!

Bill built shelves in our room and the boys room and kept the fire going for me!

Friday, Day 11...finished!

Today Bill went up and finished the back door and I stayed home and organized our food. I ran to the store to get some fresh veggies and bread and also some stamps.

Thursday, Day 10 of building...one more to go!

Well Bill made it home safe and sound. His hike went really well and his back is fine. Thank you all for your prayers for him...God is Good! Thought you would like to see some pics of his hike...

The first day after hiking 8 km they had a 100 ft. vertical drop to get to the campsite.

Tomorrow...finish back door and start on lights! We need to collect a bunch of fire wood, it's suppose to start raining tomorrow and keep up til next Wednesday. Tomorrow is the last day in our apartment, Saturday we will spend a few hours moving our food, clothes, and beds {air mattress'} up to our new home in the bush!
Our Jungle Camp home is a 1/2 mile from our apartment, one way! and we have been hiking back and forth a couple times a day for 2 weeks, with backpacks. Saturday we will hike all of our belongings up...by foot! No driving...nothing with wheels. Bill should be warmed up after his hike three days earlier.
Our Jungle Camp home has been made with used poles, duct tape, bailer twine, staples, plastic, shovels, pick ax, hand drill, bow and hand saw, 4 nails {used for the table} and one really cool machete! {Thanks Vern and Holly!}

Wednesday, Day 9 of building!

Today Jake finished his chair...it is so comfy and I've already requested another one! Way to go Jake!

After the chair was finished we had lunch, then realized that we didn't have a can opener: so we used some of Bill's tools to poke a hole in the top of the can and then peeled open the top.

Our dragonfly was back on top of flowers during lunch...I guess he decided to be our Jungle Camp Mascot! {Notice the mirror hanging...I hung that up today}

Tuesday, Day 8 of building!

When we woke up to the pouring rain...we had a thought!

We went and got our breakfast at Tim Horton's and then we got started.

Emma, our fun neighbor was as crazy as us and was out there working too. She's awesome!

Today we decided that we would accomplish one thing...and Garrett was the man for the job.

He made me a beautiful shelf for our canned food and some supplies. Our car battery will sit on the top shelf and will power our house for the month. Bill will hook our lights up to it and we will charge it throughout the month with a solar panel.

He did a great job and when he finished building it I put cardboard down on the shelves and then covered them with material. His dad will be so proud.

Deanna and her family came out and brought lunch for us and Emma and her boy Joe came too.
It was fun to sit around the table in our "new" home and eat! Fred {Deanna's husband} was able to help Emma get some plastic up on their home and the family also helped some other ladies who's husbands are on the hike...what a nice family, they all have such a servants heart!

My friend the dragonfly was back today...I knew he liked me!

Jake was on fire duty again, our goal is to have an oven that will get up to 350-400 and maintain it. Jake is able to get it up there and then he let's it cool to about 200, it helps dry the stove slowly. He also started building a chair...he thought he would get that finished tomorrow.

It was a rainy day that went by really fast, just as we were packing up to leave the sun came out. Tomorrow we are going to attempt to build a door. I hear that it's hard but we are up to the challenge.

Day 7 of building!

Bill and the rest of the guys in our class headed out this morning at 8:00 a.m. for their three day hike...here is the crew!

And for us...we headed out this morning on our own...wait til you see what I did while Billy was gone.

First we arrived to some special surprises....Garrett ran ahead to survey the area, good thing he did. He was shooing a chipmunk out as I was coming in...my scream made the chipmunk run back in to Garrett. Then Garrett showed me the footprints of a very large raccoon...in the changing room area. I guess he liked my shower and the pink tarp!

Then as I was up the hill helping someone out we heard shouts from the boys below! With a hundred thoughts running through our minds we went to discover that our hen turkey had hatched out her chicks. She let Garrett get pretty close to get some great pictures. There were nine hatched and two left to hatch out.

Garrett headed out to help our neighbor, Emma, and Jake and Ernest got our fire going. The drier the stove, the faster it will be ready for baking. They had the oven temp up to 350 for a while...PERFECT!

I got busy hanging poles to staple our shower curtain to and in our changing area. I also installed our shower caddy!

Here is our Guest Book! I found it at the big Yard Sale that they had here in the gym {New Triber's could shop for free} So this was a great find and went perfect with my island theme! I even found a pen a friend gave me from Honduras that was perfect. We will be able to store our pictures and memories in this book. When I got it, it had Hawaii on the bottom so I took it off and wrote Jungle Camp 2008 with twine...pretty cool Eh?

A starfish that fell off my skirting so I hung it in my kitchen window above the sink!

Here is how it looked when I left tonight...sure wish you were all here to come and have a cup of coffee or tea with me! Maybe tomorrow we'll actually build something! Hee hee hee! I guess you'll have to wait and see!
Thanks to Julie {Bill's mom} and the Wednesday Night Spaghetti Gang who got us the grass skirting and helped with so much of our food and supplies! Also, a huge thanks to my parents and Bill Updike who helped with many of our needs as well...you have all been a Huge Blessing!

Saturday, Day 6th!

Well I have many strange photos to show you today...I know so far all of the photos have been strange but these pics bring me GREAT JOY!!!!

At first you may be thinking that Bill and Jake are hiding from the camera...Nope! They just finished the table and are stapling the tablecloth on.

Today we reheated a pizza I made last night. {That is one sad looking pizza} What a great time we are having here and I'm so excited to move up here I can hardly wait.

This is just not an ordinary sink with running water...this has awesome pressure and HOT and COLD Running water. No boys involved, just gravity and Bill's skills! Another great feature is that it is a double sink! Oh Yeah...I've been waiting all year for this.

Now this may seem odd but to us it is a blessing! These pieces of plastic have a log stapled on the bottom. This is how we shut our windows, when it rains or gets cold at night we shut them down. Bill is opening them up because we are getting a nice cool breeze flowing through our house.

I know to you black plastic is not your interior wall of choice...but to us...well bottom line we don't have a choice so I will have to find a way to make that black wall pretty! It is the only way we get any privacy so...I love it! Now you will see the rooms take shape.

This is the shower! See the rock pile by our feet? Jake dug that the other day and the grate that Garrett made will go over it. Bill ran Hot {yes, I said HOT} and Cold water to the shower...and again with great water pressure. Don't you just love that pink tarp that I found in the barn up here? The boys we're not thrilled. hee hee hee! I love this...can you tell?

And of course I took time out to have fun with my friend, Deanna! Love her...and her family...if you would, please pray for God's timing for the sale of their house, they desire to come through the training and get back to the field. They were Associates with New Tribes for one term and really want to go "Full Time".

Here is how we left it today...you wonder...what's left? We have to build 2 doors, wire the house for our lights. {We'll describe all that next week} We will put down tarps in our bedrooms and a little carpet too. Monday Bill leaves for his 3 day hike. As we end our first week up here building, it has been an amazing week of learning. Learning how to work together, figure out how to build this and make it hold up to rain, wind and...kids! By today the bugs, caterpillars and spiders that are always on us and our stuff no longer bother me as much. That alone is amazing. And Bill has displayed wonderful patience with us...he is a rock! Thank you all for your neat emails, check back Monday for more...we have one more week to build!

Friday, Day 5

This will be brief...tonight is our pizza and a movie night! Here is how the day went...

We started out making hot dogs and eating with friends...they brought their food down and ate with us...our first dinner guests! {Hey Keith and Sue, thanks for the dogs!}

We had a very bad rain last night so we expected to get up there and have to tear out all of our cushions and foam...God is gracious! Our seating area was dry. Bill and the boys started in finishing the windows and got to work putting all our outside walls up...clear and black plastic. We have black plastic around the bottom and full walls around our bedrooms and shower. Clear plastic in the kitchen and dining room helps keep it light in there.

I finished up the stove and added my own little decorative flare!

Our house measures 19 feet across the front and 20 feet deep with a 5 foot porch! Here's how it looked when we left today.

Thursday, Day 4

We didn't waste anytime getting started this morning. We usually get up in the bush after 8:30 a.m. but this morning we were heading up there by 8:00 a.m. I {Jen} woke up before 5 a.m. and couldn't get back to sleep so I got up and spent a nice quite morning with the Lord. So I was up and ready to go!

Garrett and Jake got busy digging a trench around our house. We will bury our plastic in it to keep the woodland critters out of our house. Bill started right in on the frame work for our seating area in our dining room...and I had to put clay on the inside of our stove so once that was done we built a fire in it. It's awesome! I will do some finish detail work on the outside over the next few days.

YEA...Fire!

Bill ran the water lines to the sink, hot water tank and the shower! I can't wait to be able to take a shower in my own place again. If you look under the counter you will see that he ran the water lines under ground and then up to the back of the stove and then up the bracing over to the shower stall.

Garrett and I got busy putting in the logs for our seat, I finally got it figured out!

The cute little girl in the picture came down to see us with her mom and 2 little brothers. She brought me a picture that she made for me, it says..."Mis Jen I love you". I loved it and made a frame for it and had her hold it so I could get a picture of her. What a sweetie!
The other picture is taken at the top of the hill where 2 staff families will live and 8 families from our class, there is us and one other family down by the creek.

The boys are working together to finish up the seats and Bill and I worked on getting down some counter top. Which consists of logs, cardboard, table cloth and clear plastic. We put 4 marble tiles together on the one end so that I have a good working space for pies, pizza and bread.

We would also ask you to please pray for Peter, he is one of our teachers who fell 2 days ago while working up there and has really messed up his ankle. He and his wife are suppose to be moving up there with all of us and he has been told to stay off his feet for 1 week and then get an cast next week. Also, one of the guys in our class, Matt, was nicking some knots of a log and a chip of wood scratched his eye. Please pray for healing and relief from their pain.

Day 3

We really took off and got a lot done today. It is really exciting to see this all come together. I can't wait to move up! Let's take a look at what got done today...

Bill and the boys finished putting all the horizontal door and wall logs up. So the boys room, the shower room and our bedroom are all separated now. And it looks great!

Garrett took off with the counter top and got it all woven together...Great Job Garrett! He tried to show me how to do it three times and we finally decided that the job was Garrett's, I just couldn't figure it out.

I had Bill hang our screen in our bedroom window...I thought it would get the mosquito's used to the new barrier and let them know that they are not welcome.

They got the kitchen sink in and plumbed...we're ready for water. The drain is tied into the big hole that Jake dug yesterday. We are all looking forward to having running water...soon!

The day wouldn't be complete if Jake didn't start a fire. It only needs to produce some smoke to keep the bugs away...he got just a little out of control.

With Bill and I having family that has served or is serving in the Military we couldn't help but show our patriotism by hanging our American Flag! We are proud to be an American and of those who fight for our freedom!!!

Bill is putting our back door pole on...we will have a wood pile right out the back door. This will come in very handy when we get the stove fired up each day.

The right front side of the house is Garrett and Jake's room...yes they have a screen in their window too! It's never to soon to discipline those mosquito's.

Bill and Jake got the bed made too! Well done guys! They will have tarps and air mattress' to sleep on once we move in. They look really tired.

Here is our refrigerators, they are 2 metal 5 gal. buckets! Jake dug the hole today, it is 2 feet wide and 18" deep. Thanks Jake!

Well it's the end of the day...and we feel good about what got accomplished! We thank the Lord for His guidance as we continue to look to Him for our strength and wisdom. Thank you all for your prayers for us , it has been quite encouraging to come home at the end of each day and hear from you and to know that you are praying for us.

Day 2 of Building

First I'll start with the plastic going on the roof last night. That's how we ended day 1! That was what our goal was so we're right on track.

Beginning of day 2 Jake started digging the hole for our shower and Garrett tied logs together for our shower floor. Bill and I put some bracing up in the front and back of the house. Then we started on what is called the cradle for our stove. While Garrett, Bill and I worked on that Jake dug another hole for our sink drain.

Once the cradle was finished we put some plastic and dirt in it and then dropped the stove in. For the most part the stove was already made then Bill made some adjustments to it. Because we are at the bottom of a hill we will have pretty good pressure so he added a hot water tank made out of a pressure tank. {Love him!} He will run the hot water to our sink and shower. What a guy! {There's Jake in the last pic digging the drain for our sink.}

While Bill and the boys started figuring out the poles for our counter and sitting area I started on the clay for the stove. We all had to carry buckets of clay down to our lot...they were very heavy! I put a good covering of clay all over it and even had some fun playing in the "mud"...I'm just a kid at heart!

The clay took all afternoon and I will begin to put some finishing touches on it tomorrow.

Here are some final pics of the day...it may not seem like much but every little pole helps and the stove, shower floor and sink drain are all needed! The weather was great today and we all anxious to move up...Jake wanted to sleep there tonight.

Jungle Camp Building Day 1

What a beautiful we have had. The sun is out and in the bush it's cool with a nice breeze. We had a great start. Our day started with laundry at 8:00 a.m. and then we headed into the bush!

We started out digging holes and setting our poles! Notice who's working and who is in the background with his arms folded...hee hee hee!

Bill taught Garrett and Jake how to use a water level...pretty cool! Bill has brought his carpentry skills out here and has measured twice and tried his best to make the house straight. WHich is extremely hard with all these used trees.

The poles are in place and we're about ready for our roof! Which is a big piece of clear plastic. Notice how we attached the logs together...yes it is Duck Tape! Gotta Love It! I'm home making dinner for now after we eat we'll head back up and get that plastic on. It is coming together much faster than I thought and it's fun. I must go but be sure to check back tomorrow to see how it's coming!

Oh, here is Jake burning leaves, they make nice little smoke piles which keeps the bugs away.

I on the other hand have made my first "thing" on a sewing machine...isn't this the cutest chicken you've ever seen? Thanks Eleanor! I sewed 2 log cabin quilt pieces and then put them together and filled it with rice...this chicken brings us many laughs!

We went up to our Jungle Camp lot the other day. We will be down by a stream with one other couple, everyone else will be up the hill. As we begin to clear things you will get a better idea of our "new home". This picture is Bill and Jake taking measurements.

Spring is here and boy is it beautiful! Thought you'd like to see some updated stuff here. I've {Jen} not been feeling well, those migraines have been getting worse. But I think I'm on the mend. I've been to the Chiropractor twice this week and I'm feeling much better. The pics below are from a Spring Picnic that we had...well those in our housing row got together and grilled and ate. It was fun but that day it was chilly. The weather here has been beautiful and I got out today and took some pictures. Check out the new building going up. We have had really good friends {more like family} from our home church come up once a month and help build this. It's been great for us to have them here and they are a huge help. It will house 6 student families.

We have been so busy and I'm finally stopping for a second to let you know that things are going really well here. We are still getting piles of snow {love it!} and there have been some neat ways to help out here. I {Jen} had bad headaches/migraine's for 6 days straight, they went away for 3 days and then I had another. I woke up Tuesday morning and I finally feel good! YEA! Even with the headaches, I was able to babysit, make some meals for people and only miss one day of class. Bill has been busy working on the new building, I'm hoping to post some pictures of it tomorrow. We have some special classes this week and then next week the staff will be having refreshment classes. I will be leading a "Stamping Class" for the staff ladies on Wednesday. It will be a lot of fun to show them some quick and easy cards that they can make. I've also been asked to share at a ladies tea time if not in March than in April, this will also be an exciting time to encourage ladies.
We drove around on Saturday looking for a Michael's {craft store} and we found some neat places. I'm posting some random pics that I hope you enjoy!

Most days are but this was different. Garrett & Jake brought home very, very good report cards! Great Job boys! We are very proud of you both. Also, Bill and I had to teach a review class on the Holy Spirit and we did that today. Notice the picture Bill has on the powerpoint, he really just wanted to show everybody our white deer back in NY.
With all of that out of the way we can now enjoy the rest of our month...what's left of it! It's been snowing a bit and for those who know Jake and his love for his bike you will feel his sadness. Poor Jake!

Yes, we are alive!

It has been a bit frustrating but for a limited time we have internet. Internet has been so sketchy, we check everyday and we often go a couple days and can't connect. Today has been the longest that we have been able to be on. Since we got back we often would try to get on and would have internet for a couple minutes every couple of days....ahhhhhh! The frustrating part has been that it is our only means of communicating or knowing what is going on outside this bubble. What a challenge it has been not to receive help or give updates on the past couple weeks. We had one week of scratch cooking classes and then this past week we had to cook all week by scratch. We couldn't use appliances, {toaster, coffeemaker, microwave, and mixer} you get the idea. We couldn’t eat anything out of a can or box, or instant. I have put together a slide show and an album on the right so you can see what we've made. We liked everything our menu consisted of..."Breakfast": perked coffee {thank you Keith & Sue Schrader}, powdered milk {YUM!} Crepes {filled with strawberry jam or chocolate chips}, eggs, bacon, toast {toasted in frying pan} it's was yummie with some sugar and cinnamon sprinkled on top. "Lunch": Egg salad & chicken salad sandwiches, tossed salad {with homemade French dressing, YUM} or broccoli salad or tacos with homemade tortilla's {these were a favorite}. "Dinner": Macaroni & Cheese, canned peaches and pears, Tacos. We were asked to have company one night so we invited our good friends, Hank & Margaret Demark and Cynthia Mushaluk. I'm not sure of my "normal" cooking so by scratch was a test. But with good friends we could have a good laugh or cry together. I made Sweet & Sour Chicken with rice and green beans. They all approved and were healthy enough to come back to work the next day...thanks guys for eating with us! Some extras that we made was...sour cream, Yogurt {didn't turn out, I will try again} Hot Cocoa, Granola, Bread, French dressing. Things that we will continue making from scratch are...pizza, crepes, tortillas and on occasion bread. Mine turned out good but it was ugly. I don't know how to knead and I think I added to much flour...oh well! We ate it anyways. The guys were very patient and gracious.
Friday night we had a class Potluck with everything made from scratch...it was all soooooo good! I made Empanada's and pastries, some filled with strawberries and some with peaches. Hope you enjoy the pictures! Love you all, Jen {for the Morlang Gang!}

Our first day home was spent relaxing...and laughing. My mom waited for us to put the Christmas tree up...I'm so glad she did. My sister Shelly came over and helped. We had to rearrange the living room and then we began...What a nice tree and great memories!

A little detour...

We left Durham around 1:oo p.m. on Friday and took a little detour. We were able to drop off a second year student, Leah, at the Toronto airport. Then just before we crossed the big bridge to the border the gas light came on so we took the exit before the bridge and ended up in Niagara Falls. We finally arrived at my parents at 9:00. Ready for a much needed sleep! We had great weather all the way home. Praise the Lord!!!

You will see a creek and a bridge and then a pipe coming out of a box in the creek...that is where we get our fresh spring water from. I went down today and got some and thought you would enjoy the walk with me.

We were quite busy getting ready for our BIG Thanksgiving Feast away from home! This was our first...yes first Thanksgiving away from our families. This year we had dinner with 44 members of our new family! What a great time we had together. A second year student, Liz, and I planned for our dinner that would take place at 6 pm Thanksgiving Evening. We had classes as usual because in Canada it was just another day. I started baking and cooking at Noon and along with everyone bringing food we had quite a feast. What a wonderful evening we had and so thankful for the relationships that we are able to build. Oh, we ate...turkey, ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, green beans, cranberry sauce and bread...and lots and lots and lots of dessert! YUM!

We were all quite excited to wake up Monday morning to our first snow fall. It stayed around all day and snowed a little on and off all week. It's Thursday and snowing once again...someone put a shovel on the porch but there are no instructions! UM! I guess we will be using it sooner than we thought. Thank God for His perfect timing in the change of seasons, just as He is faithful to change the seasons He is faithful to care for us.

We surprised our family and friends last weekend! Bill wanted to get some hunting in and it was neat to see Jen's dad, he just celebrated his 80th birthday on Oct. 31...Happy Birthday Dad! We enjoyed a fun pizza party at Jen's brother's house and Bill shot a deer...with the camera!

Last Sunday it was 70 and this Sunday {10/28} it was in the 30's when we got up. We were quite excited to get a picture of our first snow in Canada.

What a beautiful day for a Sunday drive. The weather was sunny and the countryside is always picture perfect. As we were leaving church today we went on a tour of the church and are looking forward to having Garrett and Jake get involved with their youth group Wednesday evenings and all of us getting into Sunday School. What a blessing the service was, today we knew every song, {up until today we didn't recognize any worship songs in the churches we visited} and there was a visiting missionary from West Africa. How exciting to hear how the Lord is building His church there. I have posted another photo album below of the pictures I took today as we drove around...I hope you enjoy them!

Canoe Trip, Visit to New York, & a Festival!

So much goes on here in a week that it's hard to keep up! Wednesday the 3rd we went on a canoe trip down the Saugeen River. It was a beautiful trip and lots of fun.
Then on Friday the 5th we packed a suitcase and headed to New York where we we be staying with my {Jen} parents. We had a three day weekend where we packed every second of it, believe it or not it was very relaxing and a lot of fun. We were able to spend time with family and friends. Bill & the boys were able to get an afternoon of paintball in while I shopped and spent time with my mom and sister, Shelly. Saturday evening had us all relaxing and catching up with close friends, Pastor Len, Hope and the Rector family. Sunday we were up and at our home church where we were able to share briefly of our time in Canada and see our dear friends at Seneca Community. Sunday afternoon Bill's mother cooked an entire Thanksgiving dinner for us seeing we won't be home for our traditional Thanksgiving in November. What a great time we had with his family, sharing and catching up. Monday we started packing up to head home! My mom and brother, Bob gave us generously from their gardens. {some was fresh, canned, and frozen}, a dear lady from church sent us home with two boxes of food, and another family sent us on our way with a cooler full of "treats". There are somethings that we were going to learn to live without and beef and butter were on the list...thank you to all who blessed us "above and beyond."
We made it back after a long wait getting to the border...2 miles took 2 1/2 hours. God is so good to us...He blessed us with an amazing weekend, safety in travel, and being with our loved ones. We were ready to get back to our training and lives here. We had a Festival on Friday, the 12th. We ate hot dogs, enjoyed some games and laughing with our classmates and teachers.

We have the privilege this week to listen to one of New Tribes first missionaries. Les & Lorraine have been with New Tribes since 1942 when they started. Listening to the history and God's faithfulness throughout the years is truly a blessing. Les shared that there were seven men who stepped out in faith and organized what we know today as New Tribes Mission...one of these men is 96 years old and continues to have a vision to reach the lost and a desire to go. Yes, I said go. He still wants to go back to Indonesia! God Bless him! We want to thank you all for your prayers last week as we went through some special training, it all went very well and we are grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of it.

What a Week!

We had a very productive week! We were able to get pears for $4 a bushel. We bought 2 bushel. That is a lot of pears!!! I canned 31 quarts, made 1 very large pan of Pear Crisp, and made of a large bowl of Pearsauce {made just like smooth applesauce} it is very yummy. I also got a 20 lb bag of potatoes for $2, so I was able to can 15 qt. of potatoes. It was a lot of work but worth every moment.
